Breathing Habits: Their Profound Effects on Health and Performance

Breathing is psychophysiological, that is, it cannot be understood simply by looking at and manipulating its mechanics. Everyone learns breathing habits. These habits, although learned in the same way based on the same principles, can work for you or against you in profound and subtle ways. Statistics suggest that tens of millions of people worldwide suffer with the profound and misunderstood symptoms and deficits of learned dysfunctional breathing habits. Unfortunately, these habits are rarely identified by practitioners and/or their clients, their effects mistakenly attributed to other causes, and their resolutions prescriptive in nature where focus is on symptoms rather than on causes. Breathing habits are generally learned unconsciously and work quietly and unwittingly in the background causing, triggering, exacerbating, and perpetuating symptoms and deficits of all kinds, e.g., physical, emotional, cognitive, perceptual, and behavioral. Breathing habits are motivated, regulated by triggers, sustained by their immediate outcomes, supported by misguided beliefs, and defined by specific personal histories. Learning and teaching optimal breathing necessarily includes identifying and specifically addressing these habits. This requires understanding the working relationship between breathing mechanics and respiratory chemistry and how breathing serves us in diverse psychological ways besides providing for healthy respiration. When psychological objectives are at odds with physiological requirements there can be serious trouble, e.g., an emergency run to the hospital. When these objectives and requirements work together there is more presence, connection, clarity, availability, and awareness.
